The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life for people and communities in the UK both now and in the future.  The foundation’s priorities are the arts, children and young people, the environment, social change, environment and social investment.  Successful applicant organisations can demonstrate that they are building a cohesive, sustainable, creative and stable society.

In 2015 Esmée Fairbairn Foundation awarded £37m to 300 organisations demonstrating their commitment to mission priorities.  Within the priority areas the foundation targets: –



  • Art with a social impact
  • Supporting emerging talent
  • Organisations at a pivotal point
  • Museums


Children and Young People

  • Improving support for disadvantaged children and young people
  • The rights of vulnerable children and young people
  • Addressing the root causes of low educational attainment and challenging behaviour
  • Empowering young leaders
  • Young people leaving care – a focused finding stream



  • Connecting people with nature and environment issues
  • Countering the effects of damaging activity
  • Nature conservation on land and at sea
  • Lesser known plants, animals and organisms


Social Change

  • Participation – marginalised and excluded individuals and groups
  • Place – revitalising community life
  • Injustice – systemic change around injustice and inequality



  • Innovation in alternative approaches
  • Food and wellbeing
  • Working towards a more coherent food sector


Social Investment

  • This is outside of our remit of fundraising through grant and contract applications for the voluntary sector. This fund has two key principles: –  Social return and 2. Financial return.
